Main Street Acupuncture
How acupuncture works: Acupuncture is the insertion of thin, sterile, metal needles to stimulate specific points within channels, anatomically landmarked on the surface of the body. These stimulation points are called acupoints. There are 365 commonly used acupuncture points within 20 channels in the human body that are connected internally and externally to other organs and structures. With a history of 2000 to 3000 years, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Traditional East Asian Medicine (TEAM) has formed a unique system to diagnose and treat illness. This approach is fundamentally different from that of Western medicine, and can complement it.
Common questions:
How long are acupuncture sessions? Typically, it takes 15 to 30 minutes of attentive manipulation of the needles, and 20 to 30 minutes of retaining them. Depending on the individual and whether the issue is acute or chronic, benefits should be noticed between one and three treatments, with maintenance follow-ups for chronic issues.
What is ims needling vs acupuncture? Acupuncture is different than Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS), also known as dry needling. The same needles are used, but in a different way. To learn more about IMS, or watch a video of it being performed, please click HERE.
What about acupuncture with massage? Acupuncture with massage is effective for relaxation and stress managment. It can also be helpful at improving blood flow and preparing the body for additional modalities if required.
Acupuncture when pregnant? There are certain acupoints that your acupuncturist will not perform if you are pregnant. But there are some points that are safe and effective. Speak with your acupuncturist to determine if it is right for you.
